Aventra Defense Systems has raised $17.5 million to move its Piranha autonomous precision payload system into low-rate initial production, expand its Herndon, Virginia, manufacturing capacity and develop additional platforms for long-range strike, one-way attack and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
The financing was led by Konvoy, with participation from existing investor Lavrock Ventures and new investors Booz Allen Ventures, Sands Capital and Langford Industries. The round also includes a funding facility from Western Alliance Bank.
Founded in 2025, Aventra is developing autonomous systems that use high-altitude balloons and stratospheric air currents to transport payloads over long distances. Its Piranha platform is designed to support ISR, electronic warfare and kinetic missions while reducing the fuel and cost requirements associated with conventional long-range systems.
The company said Piranha has completed approximately 400 flights demonstrating autonomous stratospheric reentry, long-range glide and precision delivery of kinetic and ISR effects under realistic operating conditions.
Aventra has also placed the system with military operators during the U.S. Army’s Arcane Thunder 26 exercise and other closed evaluations, exercises and combat tests involving U.S., allied and partner military units. The company said it has secured its first series of delivery contracts, though it did not disclose their value, customers or production quantities.
“In under a year and with a lean capital investment, we took Piranha from concept to field deployment overseas, secured our first series of delivery contracts, and matured the system into a fully integrated platform,” co-founder and CEO Michael Weigand said.
